About The Job Assistant Director of Horticulture Location: Chaska, Minnesota The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, in partnership with the Department of Horticultural Sciences in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences, is one of the nation's premier university-based public gardens. The Arboretum's extensive landscapes across 1,200 acres include 49 display and specialty gardens, 44 plant collections with 6,100 taxa, and native woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands. The Arboretum seeks a passionate and experienced horticulture manager to oversee daily operations of the horticulture and collections department. Reporting to the Director of Horticulture and Collections, the role involves landscape operations, garden management, arboriculture, plant health care, and stewardship of natural resources. Collaboration with other departments is essential, requiring broad horticultural expertise and leadership skills. The Assistant Director will lead a team of full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff, fostering a respectful, inclusive, and team-oriented workplace. The role includes participation in Arboretum-wide committees and effective communication across the organization. Essential Duties Horticultural and Operational Leadership 70% Coordinate daily landscape management, staff supervision, and resource allocation. Manage a seven-day operation including weather monitoring, snow removal, and event support. Set departmental goals aligned with world-class standards. Provide horticultural insights for projects, including landscape management and collection development. Supervise plant health care programs and manage greenhouse and nursery production. Assist with infrastructure maintenance and safety compliance. Administrative and Project Management Tasks 20% Manage staffing, organizational structure, and professional development. Oversee budgets and resources. Coordinate with facilities and project management for horticultural projects. Promote volunteer engagement and community involvement. Other Tasks 10% Coordinate with other departments for programs and research. Develop external partnerships and interface with government agencies. Assist with media and organizational duties. Qualifications Required Qualifications BA/BS plus 8+ years in horticulture or related fields, or advanced degrees with fewer years of experience. Minimum 2 years supervisory experience. Within one year, must earn ISA Certified Arborist credential. Ability to work in all weather conditions, including evenings and weekends. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s in related fields. Experience in public gardens, project management, and team leadership. Experience with grounds management equipment. Pay and Benefits Range: $92,000 - $98,000 annually, depending on qualifications.
