Associate Project Engineer

JGM Engineering Graduate Rotational Program

Developing Future Leaders in Steel Fabrication & Construction

Program Overview

The JGM Engineering Graduate Rotational Program is an 18-month initiative designed to give recent college graduates (majored in engineering, civil engineering, or similar fields) hands-on experience in industrial construction and structural steel fabrication .

Participants rotate through three departments:

  • Estimation
  • Project Management
  • Field Engineering

Each rotation lasts about 6 months.

Rotation 1: Estimator (6 months)

Supervisor: Senior Estimator

Objective: Learn how to estimate project costs by working on real jobs with our senior team.

Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for materials and labor
  • Use software to develop cost models
  • Request pricing from suppliers and subcontractors
  • Build detailed cost breakdowns and bids
  • Work closely with the sales and project teams

Skills Gained:

  • Estimation software (Bluebeam, Salesforce, Excel, Tekla EPM)
  • Budgeting and cost control
  • Bid preparation and risk evaluation
  • Sales and marketing alignment

Outcome:

Understand how accurate cost estimation impacts bidding and profitability.

Rotation 2: Project Engineer (6 months)

Supervisor: Project Manager

Objective: Assist in managing projects from start to finish—on time and on budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Support scheduling and resource planning
  • Track progress and milestones
  • Coordinate between design, fabrication, and field teams
  • Help with procurement and contract documentation
  • Manage deliverables, resources, and budget
  • Communicate with vendors, subcontractors, and clients
  • Attend meetings and site visits
  • Document lessons learned and take feedback for growth

Skills Gained:

  • Project tools (Microsoft Project, ERP systems, Excel, ProCore)
  • Time and resource management
  • Team collaboration and communication
  • Client coordination

Outcome:

Gain full project lifecycle knowledge and skills to lead execution.

Rotation 3: Field Engineer (6 months)

Supervisor: Superintendent

Objective: Get boots-on-the-ground experience with steel structure installation.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct on-site inspections and quality checks
  • Ensure safety standards are followed
  • Solve technical issues in the field
  • Coordinate logistics and materials
  • Enforce safety procedures
  • Keep field documentation updated
  • Join safety programs and initiatives

Skills Gained:

  • Fieldwork and steel installation
  • Real-time problem-solving
  • Safety and compliance
  • Field-team communication

Outcome:

Understand how jobsite conditions affect project timelines and collaboration.
