Overview
We are seeking a curious, detail-oriented, and visually savvy Editorial Assistant to join our fast-growing editorial team at Gathering Point News —a new media platform covering the culture, science, and strategy of events. From global summits and galas to underground salons and tech conferences, we tell the real stories behind how people gather and why it matters. The ideal candidate is as comfortable fact-checking a paragraph as they are experimenting with AI tools, refining story arcs, or helping shape the visual presentation of a Substack feature. This role offers the chance to work side-by-side with an experienced founder/editor and contribute to stories, features, and formats that blend smart journalism with cultural insight.
Responsibilities
Assist in the proofreading and editing of features, essays, newsletters, and multimedia scripts to ensure clarity, coherence, and alignment with our brand voice.
Conduct thorough fact-checking, including dates, quotes, names, and attributions—especially for historically anchored or industry-specific content.
Collaborate with writers and the editor-in-chief on story development, proposal writing, and light reporting.
Help organize editorial calendars, track deadlines, manage Google Docs/Substack drafts, and assist with publishing across platforms.
Participate in creative ideation sessions, generating content concepts and visual storytelling ideas.
Format and prep Substack stories with embedded media, pull quotes, and carousels that reflect high editorial polish.
Engage with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, InVideo, Suno, D-ID) to support draft development and multimedia integration.
Occasionally assist with content curation for special series such as Clipboard Confidential , Weekend Wisdom Bank , and Event Pro Bucket List .
Skills
Strong editorial eye and proofreading skills; grammar nerds welcome.
Ability to collaborate across writing, research, and light production roles.
Interest or experience in journalism, media, or newsletter publishing (especially Substack).
Visual instinct for magazine-style layouts and what looks good on a page or screen.
Creative thinker with a deep curiosity about culture, people, and events.
Familiarity with AI tools and openness to learning new systems to support editorial output.
Excellent organization and communication skills with a calm, deadline-ready mindset.
Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style is helpful, but not required—willingness to learn is key.
