Job Description

Job Title: Career Technical Education Teacher

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal, Career Technical Education Coordinator

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals: 


  • To provide an educational environment in which career technical education students succeed academically, socially, and physically in accordance with system philosophy, goals and objectives.

  • To implement an effective educational program for the designated grade level and career technical subject area using the current designated course of study, appropriate materials and resources, and best instructional practices.

  • To serve as a student advocate, role model, and professional resource for parents, the community and the school system.

Qualifications:


  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. 

  2. Valid Alabama teaching certificate in the career technical subject area assigned.

  3. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

  4. Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of students at the designated grade level(s) and in the designated content area(s)/subject(s).

  5. Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.

  6. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.

  7. Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.

  8. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.

  9. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.

  10. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.

  11. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.

  2. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of career technical education in the subject/field/cluster assigned. 

  3. Demonstrates knowledge of current educational research and implements best instructional practices. 

  4. Utilizes technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning.

  5. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students.

  6. Facilitates and monitors the integration of technology in the classroom.

  7. Maintains appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn. 

  8. Works effectively and collaboratively with peers, parents, administrators, and other school system staff to maximize student achievement.

  9. Creates or selects long-range instructional plans based on a review of system and state curriculum priorities, student profiles and instructional priorities.

  10. Sequences content and activities appropriately; paces lessons and instruction to maximize student achievement.

  11. Instructs students in the use, care, maintenance, and safe operation of program equipment and tools in the assigned field of instruction. 

  12. Makes minor repairs to program equipment as needed; reports major repairs and maintenance needs for program to designated system personnel.

  13. Maintains contact with business/industry community to keep abreast of job entry requirements, current technology and practices in the designated content field, and for student referrals and placements.

  14. Maintains controls and inventories of program equipment and resources to prevent loss and to maximize efficient use of resources.

  15. Develops, implements, and revises instructional plans and lessons for effective instruction, student achievement, and program operation according to Business and Industry Certification (BIC) standards.

  16. Establishes and maintains a positive and safe learning environment in which students are actively engaged in the learning process and where multiple activities occur simultaneously in a laboratory setting.

  17. Provides instruction in workplace skills (punctuality, interpersonal relationships, leadership, problem-solving, ethics, good work habits, etc.) that enhances employability and student success.

  18. Plans and attends Career Technical Advisory Committee meetings to determine program needs and to maintain positive business/industry relationships.

  19. Communicates effectively and in a timely manner with counselors, administrators, and parents to report and enhance student progress.

  20. Maintains instructional momentum with smooth and efficient transitions from one activity to another.

  21. Interprets and uses data (including but not limited to standardized and other test results) for diagnosis, instructional planning and program evaluation.

  22. Uses ongoing assessment, traditional and alternative, to monitor student progress, to verify that learning is occurring and to adjust curriculum and instruction.

  23. Provides feedback to students about the appropriateness of responses and quality of work with a focus on improving student performance.

  24. Administers standardized tests in accordance with directions provided, including proctoring and secure handling of materials.

  25. Collects, receipts and submits school funds in accordance with school procedures and Board policy.

  26. Communicates high learning expectations for all students.

  27. Provides appropriate instruction and modifications for students with special and diverse needs, including exceptional education students and students who have limited proficiency in English.

  28. Provides accurate and timely information to parents and students about academic and behavioral performance of students.

  29. Recognizes overt indicators of student distress or abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral, or reporting actions.

  30. Engages in continuing improvement of professional knowledge and skills.

  31. Serves on committees, task forces, planning teams, and advisory groups as required.

  32. Actively supervises students during assigned duty before, during and/or after school.

  33. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.

  34. Supports school improvement initiatives by active participation in school activities, events, ceremonies, services and programs.

  35. Participates in state-approved evaluation program as required.

  36. Attends staff development programs, workshops, and conferences to improve professional performance and knowledge as requested.

  37. Participates in administration of state and/or standardized testing as assigned; establishes appropriate testing environment and ensures test security.

  38. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.

  39. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.

  40. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.

  41. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.

  42. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.

  43. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.

  44. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.

  45. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.

  46. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.

  47. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the principal and/or supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment : Nine, ten, eleven, twelve-month position in accordance with the Board’s salary schedule.

Evaluation:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Baldwin County Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
